Special Olympics Minnesota
The friendship started one day in Kindergarten class. I had instructed my daughter, Julia to be friendly to her classmates especially to those that didn’t seem comfortable with being there. She looked around, approached Brandon and asked if he wanted to play. At the end of the day Brandon said, “Julia, thanks for playing with me today”. That was ten years ago. Julia’s friend has Cerebral Palsy and has endured over 30 operations. To us, he is a hero and an inspiration. Each summer, Julia and Brandon’s Mom think of a motto and have T-Shirts made and go and support Brandon as he participates in track for Special Olympics. It was during those events that Julia discovered how much she loved the organization. She has volunteered for some of the events and especially loves handing out awards.
Julia has the unique talent of beatboxing and she loves to sing. Eighteen months ago, she started taking lessons from Andy Miller, a former member of an accappella group called, InPulse. Six months ago, he asked Julia, “So what are we going to do this talent of yours?” The idea of a benefit concert was birthed. On July 14th, our family hosted a benefit concert will 100% of the proceeds going to Special Olympics to help families pay for the fees to participate in the events. Joining Julia and Andy was Julia’s brother, John and a few close friends: Jon McNelis, Kristine Hildebrand, Maria Percararo, and Luis Camacho. Julia’s brother, Dan designed all the promotional materials. We also sold a CD with 4 selections from the concert on it which was professionally produced by Dan Dybing of Lux Productions.
